Like the movie, we keep re-living the same day, handing out millions of dollars

I will be sending out more than $1 million in checks today to some very happy people and businesses who found unclaimed property. This is something he has done repeatedly since taking office last year – like Bill Murray in “Groundhog Day”, living the same day over and over and over again!

Unlike Bill Murray’s character in the movie, I do enjoy repeating the same day and giving people money. Luckily, I’m not waking up to Sonny and Cher’s “I Got You Babe” every day on the radio.

Unclaimed Property examiners processed $1,071,517 in claims yesterday. This is the fourth $1 million day in 3 months. The Office wrapped up January returning more than $4 million and broke the record for returns in 2011 returning more than $33.8 million.

What is surreal about this constant repetition is the fact that while we returned so much money last year, we received even more money from holders! In fact, the office received more than $38.8 million in new unclaimed property. When you start seeing the paper listings in April with people’s names that have unclaimed property, that is how much we are holding for them. Our office is holding more than $415 million in unclaimed property that has been accumulating since 1972!

That is why it is so important to search for your name in our database at 24/7/365 or call our office at 1-855-375-CASH (2274) Monday thru Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm and a claims examiner will help you.
