FAQ: What does the State do to find unclaimed property owners?

The State Treasurer’s Office uses a variety of methods to locate unclaimed property owners. The Office of the State Treasurer has annual advertisements in newspapers throughout the state, cross-references the names of unclaimed property owners with public record information. The State Treasurer and his staff also attend public events, such as the Wisconsin State Fair to raise awareness for those that may have Unclaimed Property and help people make a claim if they find their names on the database.

Wisconsin Saves Fun Tip: Emergency Savings Account

The Wisconsin Office of the State Treasurer proudly teams up with WWBIC (Wisconsin’s Women Business Initiative Corporation) for “Wisconsin Saves.”  Each week, we will share with you a savings tip courtesy of WWBIC.WWBIC

  • Keep track of your spending. At least once a month, use credit card, checking, and other records to review what you’ve purchased. Then, ask yourself if it makes sense to reallocate some of this spending to an emergency savings account.

Helping People Find Their Cash While Having Some Fun

There are only 4 days left for the Wisconsin State Fair and the Winnebago County Fair. We have people working both fairs this year at the same time helping people claim their cash. We will be at the Dodge County Fair next week.

This is a big deal for us because we are an office of only 10 people. 5 of us spend our days working solely on claims. Each month, we are averaging nearly $3 million returned! That’s a lot of claims daily. When you add our outreach events such as the fair, we are doubling the amount of claims that come into the office.

But this is what we do and we are happy to be returning missing money to people. It’s a fun job! We have claims for more than $80,000 so far at the Wisconsin State Fair with one man claiming more than $20,000! What a surprise to come to the fair and eat a bunch of food on a stick and walk away with that much money!

And, we also get to have a little fun while at the fairs. Check out our album from the fair on our Facebook page. Our Communications Director took it upon himself to sample as much fried food on a stick that he could.

60 Foods on a Stick, $400 Million Dollars to Claim

(West Allis)  The Office of the State Treasurer is serving up missing money at its Wisconsin State Fair booth this year!  It takes 5 only minutes to search our database.

The Unclaimed Property Unit will be at the Wisconsin State Fair August 2nd thru 12th, 2012 inside the Exposition Center helping people search for their missing money.  Last year, State Treasurer Kurt Schuller and the Unclaimed Property Unit helped nearly 7,000 people find more than $200,000 during the Fair.

“I’ve been on the road at fairs and other outreach events for several months now and you would be surprised at how many people have no clue we are holding their money”, State Treasurer Kurt Schuller said. “It’s a great feeling being able to help someone claim their cash.”

The State Treasurer’s Booth is in the same location as always – right next to the Wisconsin Lottery booth in the Exposition Center.  Our fast tracking system will make it even easier to claim amounts less than $2,000! You can input all your information into the computer and, if it all matches, have your check in just a few days.

Who Doesn’t Love a Fair?

We spent last week at the Fond Du Lac County Fair and had a great time meeting with folks who searched the Unclaimed Property Database! We have visited fairs in the past, but are doing a few more fairs this year in order to reach more Wisconsinites and remind them to look for possible missing money!

This week, we will head to West Bend and the Washington County Fair! Be sure to look for us in the Expo Center and search! Then, we will be at the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis from August 2nd-August 12th. We will also have staff members at the Winnebago County Fair during that time, August 7th-August 12th. After that, the Dodge County Fair and then in September the Vernon County Fair!

As always, you can search for your missing money at http://www.wismissingmoney.com at any time!

56 days, 5 Fairs, $500,0000!

Over the last 8 weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of taking the Unclaimed Property program on the road to 5 great Wisconsin fairs. I’ve had the opportunity to see Wisconsin in the summertime, take part in some great local traditions, and best of all, return approximately half a million dollars to Wisconsinites.

Whether we were in Chippewa Falls, Seymour, Milwaukee, De Pere, or Marshfield, my staff and I were always welcomed by Wisconsinites eager to see if they could find their name among the 1 million + records in our database.

If I didn’t get a chance to see you at the fair, don’t worry; my staff and I are already working on getting more UCP events on the calendar in late September/October!

In the meantime, make sure to check out the unclaimed property database at our website: https://statetreasury.wisconsin.gov/UCPWeb/ucpsearch.aspx
